Firebird Chocolate and Coffee represents rebirth and renewal. In Arabian lore, the Phoenix would build a nest of aromatic branches and spices, we figured the cacao tree or the coffee bush were the ideal location. The nest would then be engulfed in flames, the Phoenix would die, only to be resurrected through the fire. At Firebird Chocolate and Coffee this powerful imagery is extra symbolic for us, and the farmers who grow the cacao and coffee we provide, literaly rising out of the ash of poverty with grace, power and prosperity.
The Firebird Story
I started Firebird Chocolate and Coffee out of a conversation I had with a dear friend almost 2 years ago. The conversation centered around the word “sustainability” and what we could do to shed more light and provide more help for those that need it in the developing world. Frankly, I was tired of the typical Western-based charity methods in Africa and other poor nations, and figured that we, despite our good intentions, had probably done more harm than good.
The conversation began to turn into an idea. What were the common food items (crops in this case) that were unique to parts of the developing world? Why the cocoa and coffee bean of course! Just like the mythical Phoenix rising out of the ash of poverty, Firebird Chocolate and Coffee was born.
Mission and Vision
Firebird Chocolate and Coffee sources some of the world’s finest handmade, certified USDA Organic, Rainforest Alliance chocolate and single-origin, Direct Trade coffee. Firebird’s unique funding model puts more money into the hands that need it most, the farmers who provide the cocoa and coffee beans. For every bar sold I am giving 10% of the gross profits back to these same communities that harvest many of these raw resources through community health education and access to clean and safe water initiatives.
